Ami Chitwood's Blog: My social bookmarking manifesto - DRAFT

Wow, I hadn't even noticed that delicious lost its dots!

This is great. I'm happy to read about your adventures in evangelism. They hit extremely close to home.

A while back, I made a similar statement to my team on the slightly broader topic of moving communications out of channels and onto platforms. I've believed that open communication is a good thing in theory for quite some time. Andrew McAfee, for one, has written somewhat extensively and convincingly on this topic. But I wasn't sure the shift could be made in enterprise practice.

After we all met in Boston in June, I was inspired by Luis Suarez and his now-famous effort to quit email. I've made some progress inside my company, but still have a ways to go in changing minds and practices.

Cheers on your effort and good luck. Keep us posted & I'll do the same.

PS. I added you to my delicious network. Please add me to the achitwood distribution network for enterprise, business, social computing & KM-related interestingness.

Jen - Thanks! Of course I'll add you to my forwards! (I don't think I ever sent too much to your email I hope :)

Luis is an inspiration, and, after finding out how much I need to end my own obsessions with email and to use what I have at my fingertips (and bring folks with me on this journey!

    Thanks again for commenting!

Good luck with that, Ami. I find it so hard to change people's email habits. I wish everyone in the office used an RSS reader, especially Google Reader so that we could share posts with each other.

I'm having some success with converting people to the wiki, but not nearly as many as I would like. Most of the time R and I ask people to post things to the wiki, it doesn't happen (not so much in our department -- it's other depts we have problems with). It's frustrating! How much can you bother people to change their old habits before you give up?

I do know your frustrations but know that you are making great headway in your wiki project!.

I Google Reader, but was a convert to del.icio.us before Google Reader, so my bias...

One of the challenges I have is that I get asked by 7 different folks for the same things - especially what I'm reading on XYZ topic, etc. This way, I can do it once; encourage others to utilize the tool; and then have those 7 folks talk to one another, too. Everyone wins!

I need to change my habits here - it's been hard because email is so easy (and more potentially private/personal than I can make a note/comment on a social bookmarking). I know this is lame, but be the change you want to be, and you can't expect everyone to get it until they "get it" - know what I'm sayin? Hang in there!

    Hey Ami,

I hear ya 100%. You know, as much as I am an information monger, I have yet to use del.ic.ious (!)- perhaps we can set up a time and you can show me (quickly) how you use it best..and maybe we can chat about some other tools that are on my radar.

Thanks and enjoy the rest of your summer (and your Friday!)

Hey Suzy - happy to set up some time with you in the next week/so. I know you are using some great tools with your team, so, if I can help in any way, let me know! I'm breaking my rule by getting on a wifi connection, but I'm not going to answer "work" email :)

    Talk to you soon!
